  • 4 large Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk
  • ½ cup beef broth or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)
  • ½ teaspoon salt for topping
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper for topping
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves for topping
  • Fresh thyme sprigs for garnish
  • Extra Parmesan cheese for sprinkling
  • Crispy fried onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté sliced onions in butter and olive oil over medium heat until caramelized (15-20 minutes). Stir in garlic powder, thyme, black pepper, and broth; simmer for 5 minutes.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
  3. Layer half of the potato slices in the dish, followed by half of the onion mixture and half of the creamy cheese mixture. Repeat layers.
  4. Top with extra Parmesan cheese and fresh thyme leaves.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
