Crispy Chilli Beef

A delightful dish of tender beef strips coated in a crispy batter, stir-fried with bell peppers and onions, and drizzled with a sweet-spicy sauce.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 each egg
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • for frying vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce adjust to taste
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1/2 each onion sliced
  • 1 each bell pepper sliced
  • 1-2 each red chilies sliced, optional for extra heat
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon chopped green onions for garnish

Method
 

  1. Slice the beef thinly against the grain into strips about 1/4 inch thick and set aside.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine cornstarch, flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, egg, and water to make a smooth batter.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or wok. Dip beef strips in batter and fry in batches for 3-4 minutes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  4. In the same pan, add sesame oil and sauté garlic, ginger, onion, and bell pepper for about two minutes.
  5. Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, chili sauce, and sugar. Simmer for about two minutes.
  6. Add the crispy beef back into the pan and toss everything together for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Garnish with sliced red chilies and chopped green onions. Serve immediately.
