Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 medium orange
  • Zest from 2 blood oranges
  • 3/4 cup olive oil
  • 3/4 cup blood orange juice (about 4 large oranges - reserve the zest for frosting)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (spooned and leveled)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • Zest from 3 blood oranges
  • 6 cups powdered sugar (spooned and leveled)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup blood orange juice
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate
  • 1/2 cup half and half (or 1/4 cup cream with 1/4 cup milk)

Method
 

  1. Prepare your ingredients by gathering all necessary items and zesting the blood oranges.
  2. Make the cake batter by mixing water, sugar, zest, olive oil, and blood orange juice, then combine with dry ingredients.
  3. Bake the cake in preheated oven at 350°F for about 25 minutes, then cool in pans.
  4. Prepare the buttercream by beating butter and gradually adding powdered sugar, zest, vanilla, and juice.
  5. Create the ganache by melting dark chocolate and mixing with half-and-half until smooth.
  6. Assemble the cake by layering the cake and frosting, then frost the entire cake.
  7. Finish with ganache by pouring it over the frosted cake and allowing it to set.
